University of Toronto Fencing Club

I was invited to come take some photographs of the University of Toronto Fencing Club.

Both of the gentlemen depicted above are fencing with an épée.
With an épée, attacks with only the sword's tip are allowed. The entire body is open to attack except for the hands and the back of the head.

Below is a Sabre. Attacks with the length of the blade are allowed, and anywhere above the waist is vulnerable.

The club was coached by Maitre Kenneth Wood who was a prominent figure in Canadian fencing until his death in 2010. He founded both the York and Ryerson fencing clubs and coached a variety of international teams and individuals, including Thomas Nguyen, who leads the club today.  Two pictures hang in their office today, one of the Avro Arrow which he helped build, and one of the coincidentally named Sword Beach, which he invaded on D-day.
